About IPv6 Testing & Certification

The International IPv6 Forum has established a certification program for products implementing IPv6 and aims to define common specifications tests. The program allows certified products to publicly use the Silver and Gold IPv6 Ready logos.

Use of the Silver logo certifies that a product includes mandatory IPv6 core protocols to interoperate with other IPv6 implementations. The Gold logo, on the other hand, completes the core protocols and certifies that a product has passed the tests for functionalities like mobility and remote administration, and is now ready for commercial deployment.

Each time a product receives a certification, it is assigned a unique identification number through which customers and other parties can verify the certification at the International IPv6 Forum website. There are currently six IPv6 Ready Logo testing center around the world.

The U.S. Government has also established a testing and certification program through the Department of Defense (DoD) Internet Protocol version 6 product certification program. It mandates the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) to test and certify IT products for IPv6 capability according to the Request For Comments (RFCs) outlined in the DoD's IPv6 Standards Profiles for IPv6 Capable Products (DoD IPv6 Profile). This document is the single “IPv6 Capable” definition used by the DoD.

The DoD IPv6 Profile defines six product classes: Host, Router, Layer 3 Switch, Network Appliance, Security Device, and Advanced Server. It also lists the corresponding standards (RFCs) for these product classes. Each standard is classified according to its necessity in the product class. The classifications are: MUST (the standard must be currently implemented in the product); SHOULD (the standard is recommended but optional); and SHOULD+ (the standard is currently optional, but will be soon be required).

Certified products are added to the DoD's Unified Capabilities Approved Products List (UC APL) for IPv6. Procurement offices in the DoD and U.S. Federal agencies refer to this list when making purchases of IT equipment.
