SolidDNS® Overview
The Internet as we know it today would not function without the Domain Name System, or DNS. DNS serves as the telephone directory of the Internet, allowing the use of names to access hosts on the Internet instead of using the difficult to remember IP addresses, thus making Internet navigation easier.
The distributed nature of DNS data makes it scalable to the entire world, but this also makes it possible for domain administrators to misconfigure existing servers. This also presents great opportunities to hackers who often attack poorly secured or even misconfigured DNS servers, creating a grave security threat to all Internet users that rely on accurate and reliable DNS data.
The inevitable global transition to the Next Generation Internet standard, or IPv6, presents yet another problem for DNS administrators whose DNS servers cannot handle the mapping of domain names to IPv6 addresses or cannot handle the accurate entry of IPv6 data. These issues, however, are capably addressed by the InfoWeapons SolidDNS® appliance.
The SolidDNS® Server Appliance platform provides DNS with DNSSEC and DHCP service to networks of any size in a highly secure manner. It supports both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes, making the creation and delegation of lower level domains easier and more accurate. The appliance can even automatically create reverse mappings for every registered domain or network.
SolidDNS® has a web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) that can correctly handle IPv4 and IPv6 data, and can even automatically renumber IPv6 network prefixes, ensuring rapid and error-free entry of IPv6 data. The web-based GUI connects over SSL/TLS, with added security in the form of strong client authentication using X.509 digital certificates.
SolidDNS® carries the IPv6 Ready Phase-2 "Gold" Logo (Logo ID: 02-C-000272). It certifies that the product supports the core protocols, has passed the tests for functionalities such as mobility and remote administration, and is now ready for commercial deployment.
SolidDNS® supports ENUM, the suite of protocols that unifies the global telephone system with the Internet. SolidDNS® also allows multiple organizations to use a single appliance for all their DNS needs via a "virtual" encapsulated server, which acts as if the appliance was a DNS server exclusively dedicated to each organization alone!
SolidDNS® uses an integrated BIND DNS Server that can automatically update configuration files and the Graphical User Interface. This prevents the loss of any records that may occur during the regeneration of the BIND configuration files as well as allow the administrators to immediately view the DNS records stored in the database.
SolidDNS® is the first DNS appliance with an easy-to-use graphical management interface that simplifies the intricacies of DNSSEC while taking full advantage of its power to secure DNS. The fastest models boast over 90,000 queries per second, making SolidDNS® the fastest, and easiest dual-stack DNS Solution to provide DNSSEC functionality.
SolidDNS® Benefits
DNSSEC
Beginning with version 3.0, the SolidDNS® secure DNS and DHCP appliance platform from InfoWeapons boasts extensive support for DNSSEC using graphical management interfaces. The appliance provides tools for managing cryptographic keys and features automated bulk zone signing, automatic zone re-signing, automatic key rollover, user-specified key lifetimes, and can act as an authoritative DNSSEC server.
Dual-Stack
Most existing networks will have to make the inevitable shift to the Next Generation Internet, also known as IPv6. Any server, to be at its most effective when deployed over these networks, must be able to listen to and accept connections over both IPv4 and IPv6 architectures. The SolidDNS® appliance has support for both IPv4 and IPv6, eliminating the need for separate IPv4 and IPv6 servers, reducing costs and providing administrators a simplified method of managing and controlling both networks.
Simplified Migration
With SolidDNS® automatic DNS updates, and BIND and Active Directory Support, network migration and management is simplified. With our DNS appliance, networks are automatically updated if changes in network names occur, eliminating the possibility of misconfiguring your network's DNS appliances.
Easy DNS Management and Maintenance
Management and maintenance is easier with the SolidDNS® Management System. Aside from the web-based graphical interface, SolidDNS® offers a secure serial interface for basic system configuration and an Application Programming Interface (API) to automate interaction with other systems. All interfaces are designed to configure and control the SolidDNS® appliance in such a way that even administrators with minimal knowledge on DNS can do so without any hassle.
Built-in Security
SolidDNS® has comprehensive support for high-level security and management features. Built on a hardened FreeBSD variant, SolidDNS® can withstand scans and attacks from any organization, maintaining the lowest level of exposure to any external security threats. System management and control done over SSL/TLS ensures protection for any administrative procedure. Strong client authentication, IPv6 error-correction and real-time DNS and system status reporting, together with other security features, make the SolidDNS® appliance the most secure DNS appliance in the market to date.
Straightforward Configuration
Administrative tasks are easily accomplished with SolidDNS® wizards. Administrators without specific knowledge on DNS or even junior administrators can use this simple and intuitive graphical user interface.
SolidDNS® Datasheet
As enterprises begin the transition to IPv6, they face the daunting challenge of adapting existing tools to match the specifications of the new standard. Nowhere will this be more apparent than in the basic infrastructure services such as network configuration, security, and naming services. The SolidDNS® appliances are designed to address the critical need for domain name services in an IPv6 environment while providing backward compatibility with existing IPv4 networks. Each appliance ensures the integrity of DNS data through layers of built-in security features (defense-in-depth) and an automated software update system to immediately address DNS vulnerabilities.
SolidDNS® boasts of easy-to-use advanced management features, layered security through an integrated firewall, hardened OS, and intrusion detection system, comprehensive API methods for easy integration with various backend services, IPv6-Ready Gold Certification from the IPv6 Forum, and industry leading performance reaching up to 200,000 authoritative and more than 50,000 recursive queries per second.
Beginning with version 5.1, SolidDNS® features an enhanced S-Shield Intrusion Detection System that includes an option specifying a DNS Resource Record type when setting rule parameters. To aid in advanced troubleshooting and network diagnostics, SolidDNS® now provides a Restricted UNIX Shell. The latest update also introduces DNS64 support which further enhances the role of SolidDNS® in IPv4-IPv6 transition.
