The Internet as we know it today would not function without the Domain Name System, or DNS. DNS serves as the telephone directory of the Internet, allowing the use of names to access hosts on the Internet instead of using the difficult to remember IP addresses, thus making Internet navigation easier.
The distributed nature of DNS data makes it scalable to the entire world, but this also makes it possible for domain administrators to misconfigure existing servers.
