Skype App for Android Phones Leaks User Information
A popular VoIP application could leave Android users vulnerable to hackers.
According to multiple reports, the Skype app for Android contains a flaw that could expose personal information of its users. Using this flaw, a group at AndroidCommunity.com claims they were able to create an exploit that allowed them to harvest data from a user’s device without root access or special permissions.
The AndroidCommunity.com post, which you can read here, claims that information such as account balance, full name, date of birth, city/state/county, phone numbers, email, webpage, bio and more could be mined from this exploit.
Skype did not directly admit the flaw, stating only that it has been brought to its attention and that it knows of no one who has been compromised. It recently released a new version of the app containing a fix.
"We have had no reported examples of any 3rd party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely," says Skype's Chief Information Security Officer Adrian Asher in a blog post.
