Like its counterpart for IPv4, Internet Control Message Protocol version 6 (ICMPv6) plays an essential role for the functioning of IPv6. But, as this informational RFC would show, there are a number of security risks associated with uncontrolled forwarding of ICMPv6 messages.

Prepared by Cisco, this paper evaluates many of the common known threats against IPv4 and then compares and contrasts how these threats or similar ones might affect an IPv6 network. The paper concludes that IPv6 has both benefits and drawbacks from a security standpoint.
