Small Internet service providers (ISPs) in the U.S. have been earning extra cash off clueless users through malicious DNS servers that adjust data inflight using third-party proxies. These servers secretly interrupt and redirect search queries or mistyped URLs -- usually brand names -- that are entered on a Web browser’s address bar.

DHS Identifies DNS Risks and Risk-Reduction Strategies
The domain name system (DNS), as a core aspect of the Internet, is prone to three major risks according to an assessment report released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Large scale denial of service attacks, information disclosure and loss of privacy, and policy failure have been identified as the three risks in the report.
